yUKON RIVER PEDESTRIAN CROSSING WHITEHORSE
The Yukon River pedestrian crossing involves developing a technically sound and inspiring functional plan for a bridge and trail connection that is grounded in and elevates the unique Yukon River landscape in the heart of downtown Whitehorse. This project prepared the key components needed to complete a capital project application for an active transportation bridge crossing the Yukon River. The project took tangible steps to forward this identified priority project from idea to tangible design concept with concrete input from the public. There are many benefits of active transportation, such as crossing downtown to Riverdale schools, the hospital, and commuters from Riverdale to the city core. The link is projected to also serve as access to wilderness space on the east side of the river, and the bridge will be a destination for active tourists in Whitehorse.
The Yukon River pedestrian bridge aims to serve multiple layers of the Whitehorse community. In addition to adding a supplementary link between the City centre and connecting neighbourhoods and amenities, the bridge allows for more efficient trail networks for recreational purposes and for those without access to a vehicle.
