SOUTH CANOL HERITAGE INTERPRETATION DESIGN

The South Canol Truck Dump Heritage Reserve is located at the south end of the Canol Road at Johnson’s Crossing. In August-September 2022, the South Canol site was cleared, with vehicle remnants transported to the Teslin Recycling Landfill, with others returned to the Teslin Tlingit Council (TTC) Capital Yard for storage. Several vehicles have since been salvaged from the Teslin Recycling Centre scrap metals pile.

3Pikas was retained in the fall of 2023 to produce a conceptual plan that envisions how these items, including truck cabs, chassis, and other items associated with the historical Canol road / pipeline construction, would eventually be repatriated to the Heritage Reserve site.

As part of the engagement process, two open houses and several meetings with key stakeholder groups were completed. Conceptual design options were prepared to provide a ‘roadmap’ for developing a positive and engaging site for visitors and locals to connect with Canol and Teslin Tlingit stories. Policies were prepared to provide direction to the Yukon government Heritage Resources Unit in preparing the interpretative materials.
